One of the special joys of leading EALgreen is knowing that we’re helping thousands of students, dozens of colleges and a host of donor companies achieve their unique goals simultaneously! Even more, by accomplishing our own goals, we’re enabling each of our partners to do their part in changing the world for the better. But to achieve any goal, you first need a plan.
Our plan is to raise awareness of the urgent need for businesses and colleges to come together to help financially vulnerable students solve the problem of how to pay for college. We believe this problem has a solution. We plan to start by reaching out to as many businesses and colleges as we can. In addition to building new partnerships, we want to add more value to each relationship we have built in the community over the last 30 years. And finally, we want to encourage and support each EALgreen scholar in the pursuit of their own dream.
Over the years one of the things that has most impressed us, especially about this new generation, is their interest and sincere desire to help others. As a non-profit organization founded on the principle of paying it forward that’s a mindset we understand and support. But the truth is, achieving anything in life takes conscious effort and planning. A sense of where you’re going and why you want to get there. The subject of our last blog, Courtney, is a perfect example. A childhood cancer survivor and EAL scholar, she is studying to be an advocate for other children going through a similar life-altering experience.
However, for many students, finding a specific direction after graduation can be a bit of a puzzle. And then there’s the practical necessity of getting a job to pay the rent! Plus, the world is constantly changing, often at a challenging pace that can seem hard to keep up with. Yet, once you have a vision of what gives your life fulfillment, it’s only a matter of time before a pathway seems to reveal itself.
We would like to encourage all EALgreen scholars to remember that learning is a lifelong occupation. Expanding your understanding of the world and developing empathy for others can come in many forms; whether it’s through the formal conventions of a college classroom or online classes taken while you’re on the job, attending conferences to extend your professional horizons or by traveling to cities, countries and continents you’ve never been to before. Life is full of opportunities to grow intellectually and spiritually, if we’re open to them and have the curiosity and courage to take advantage of our wonderful world.
We hope you’ll make the EALgreen site and our Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media pages part of your resources for learning and growing. It’s our plan and intention to make our site a digital address you can depend on for honest and positive conversations, fact-based information and the support you may occasionally need to succeed on your journey, wherever it may take you.
We’d love to hear about your plans and the byways of life you’ve already discovered for yourself. And if you’d like to contribute to this blog, please let us know by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Until then – have a great month and remember, Carpe diem – seize the day – is about enjoying all that life has to offer.
